Frequently Asked Questions.
What is Callanetics?
Callanetics is a non-impact exercise programme developed by Callan Pinckney which uses small, tiny precise movements (pulses) to shape the body and produce visible results fast.
How long has the Callanetics programme been around?
Callan has been teaching her programme privately for 30 years. Her first book was published almost 16 years ago and her first video was released shortly after that. Certified classes have been available for just under 10 years.
How long do you have to do the exercises before you notice results?
Most students can feel a difference in their bodies after their first class. Most students can actually see a difference after their second class. After 10 classes you will have lost a dress size and your figure will continue to tone and tighten.
We heard that Callanetics exercises are good for people with bad backs and problem joints. Why is this so?
1 The Callanetics programme is completely non-impact so there are no movements that jar the spine or any other joint for that matter.
2 While performing the exercises the body is in a safe, comfortable position. With the pelvis curled up the back is in a safe comfortable position.
3 The Callanetics exercises strengthens the deep postural muscles through the entire hip, back and shoulder areas. This strengthening and relaxing helps to keep the body in healthy pain free alignment.
How often do I need to take classes?
Twice a week will give you rapid results. Less often works more slowly.
Do I have to commit to a course of classes?
No. You can try an introductory class and then decide if you would like to do a course.
What do I wear?
Wear something comfortable that you can stretch in. We recommend wearing something that you can see your muscles working in.
Is it safe to do if I am pregnant?
That question can only be answered by you and your medical practitioner. It depends upon your health and the time of your pregnancy. Most healthy pregnant women are encouraged by their health practitioners to have regular exercise throughout their pregnancies. There have been many Certified Callanetics teachers as well as students do the exercises throughout their pregnancies with the approval of their medical practitioners.
Do I need to be coordinated to do the exercises?
No. In fact doing the Callanetics Exercise Method will give you better balance, coordination and body awareness.
Who should do Callanetics?
Callanetics suits males and females of all ages, sizes and fitness levels. The genius of Callanetics is that it works for everyone regardless of fitness level. People range in age from 15 to 80 and as the body can only do what it can do everyone walks away feeling fantastic whether they are keen exercisers or have not exercised for years.
What about medical limitations?
Callanetics can be modified to accommodate all limitations without sacrificing the effectiveness of the program.
What are some of the chronic diseases that Callanetics exercises help manage?
Scoliosis, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, crones disease and many more.
